Scholarship Essay: the steps and structure of the writing process

What is the scholarship essay ??

The scholarship essay or the statement of purpose is a motivation letter that you should write when you apply for a scholarship to study abroad as a part of your application. In the personal statement, the student who wants to apply for any university or scholarship has to explain the reason behind his or her interest to study in their university and country. You need to Describe your previous background regarding the field of study the you would like to apply for. Basically, the personal statement should focus on some important points including the students’ background, experience, short-term and long-term goals and how they are going to help their countries and make valuable contributions to their communities in their fields of study.

In fact, the personal statement is one of the main reasons behind any successful application. No matter how strong your GPA grade is or how many years of experience you have in your field of study if you don't have the ability to show off your motivation through your personal statement. Although your mark and experience play roles in getting you accepted for a scholarship you wish, your ability to write an impressive essay is essential.

A well-written essay allows you to single yourself out from the other scholarship applicants. It is a very important part and the trickiest one of application process, and it's essential that you get it right.

The steps of writing a good personal statement

• Prewriting

The first thing that you should do before starting writing your personal statement is to identify your goals and career path. Give yourself a plenty of time to read more about your field of study, the university you are going to attend and the target country. Go through the university, their courses, guidelines, and admission requirements. By doing that, you can have a clear idea of the course and the university.

• Drafting
After you have read and researched everything about your major and your target university, it is time now to start writing your first draft. Write down everything you think and why. Do not stop writing in purpose of improving your essay because it is not a good time to do that. While writing, try to pay attention to your goals, experience, skills and everything related to your field of study. Do no forget to provide specific examples of your own experience.

• Revising
After you have written your first draft of your scholarship essay, now you need to revise the essay. As we said before when you write the first draft, do not stop and try to edit or change anything. The process of editing is here by revising and choosing the best part of your first draft. Remove anything that is not relevant to your chosen course or field of Study.

• Proofreading
So, you have researched, written your first draft and revised it. Now, it is time to look for someone you trust to do proofreading for your essays. Look for someone with rich background and experience in applying for scholarships and universities. Listen to his or her recommendations and start working on them to finalize your essay.

These are the four main important steps when writing your personal statement or study plan.

Remember:
The structure of a personal statement
Although there are many ways to organize your personal statement essay, I think the five-paragraph essay is the best structure.
