An Introduction
Nowadays, many ambitious students around the globe are dreaming of studying abroad. They work hard and they try many ways to achieve their dreams. However, one of the most difficult thing any student may face is the language proficiency. Today, most universities and institutions around the world require an English language proof from any international student who is dreaming of attending their campus. There are many tests of English a student can choose to prove their English language proficiency like TOEFL which seems to be the first required test.

What is the TOEFL test?
It is The Test of English as a Foreign Language. This test evaluate English language proficiency of people whose first languages are not English. It measures your ability to read, speak, write and understand in English language. The TOEFL is conducted in different formats and in many countries by the Educational Testing Service ( ETS ).
Types of TOEFL test
There are three main types of TOEFL test: TOEFL IBT ( Internet- based test), TOEFL PBT ( paper-based test) and TOEFL ITP ( institutional TOEFL practice). Even though the first and second types have the same format; reading, listening, speaking and writing, the one is being taken online while the second is being taken on papers. The institutional TOEFL test is also taken on papers but it has no writing section. It is consisted of only three sections: grammar, listening and reading.
TOEFL IBT
TOEFL IBT is the most popular type and is recognized in most high ranking universities worldwide. This test is totally taken online and it evaluates your English language proficiency at the university level. On other words, the international students who want to study abroad need to be able to communicate effectively with their classmates, professors and others in campus. There are four sections in the TOEFL IBT test; reading, listening, speaking and writing. The whole test mostly takes four hours.
1. Reading section
The reading is the first section of the TOEFL IBT test. It usually lasts for 60-100 minutes and consists of three to five reading passages with 36-56 questions. The reading section evaluates the test taker's ability to understand authentic and academic writing. In this section, the test takers should be able to read fast and scan the text to find main keys and essential information. Moreover, understanding the main points and ideas of the passage, the General facts, the details, vocabulary in the context and the references are the most important factors to succeed in the reading section.
2. Listening section
The second section of the TOEFL IBT test is the listening. It lasts 60 to 90 minutes and it usually has 6 tracks about different personal, academic and/or scientific topics. The main purpose of the listening section in the TOEFL test is to measure your capacity to understand spoken English in the academic community. In other words, the test takers must listen and understand lectures and conversations spoken by professors or students in campus. In the listening section, the students should be able to find many essential points like the main ideas, the organization of the lecture or conversation and the speaker's attitude and/or opinion.
3. Speaking section
The speaking is the third section and it always comes after a ten-minute break.
In the speaking section, there are generally 6 tasks. The first two questions of the speaking test are independent tasks as they totally focus on your own ideas and opinions. The other four questions are called integrated tasks because you have to read and listen and speak. However, all these tasks mainly measures your ability to speak in an academic environment or outside. You should be able to speak fluently with all native speakers specially in campus. and express your opinion and describe a situation, as well as responding to questions and others' opinions. In the speaking section, you will be asked to speak about various topics including; personal, campus and academic content.
4. Writing section
The last section of the TOEFL IBT test is the writing which always consists of two tasks. This section evaluates your ability to listen and write, read and write. The first one is called integrated task since you have to read a passage, listening to an audio and respond to the question. The most important skills to to succeed in this task is to be able take notes, summarize, paraphrase and organize the situation. The second task of the writing section is an essay in which you have to express your opinion on something and support it with examples.
